Public believes Japan’s farming sector is hard & tough: survey

TOKYO, Nov. 3 ― A recent survey has revealed that the Japanese public is considering farmers, along with fishers and forestry workers, have heavy workloads and unstable incomes. The Japanese government carried out the survey, involving 1743 interviews between late August and early September. The findings showed that more than 80 percent of respondents cited workload intensity and unstable financial situations in the agricultural sector. United Nations committee adopts declaration to protect rights of small-scale farmers

NEW YORK, Nov. 22 – The United Nations General Assembly’s Third Committee adopted on Nov. 20 Japan time the Declaration for the Rights of Peasants and Other People Working in Rural Areas which recognizes and protects the rights of small-scale and family farmers. It will be formally ratified at the General Assembly in December, helping give a much-needed boost to the recognition of the farmers’ role in strengthening food sovereignty and conservation of biodiversity. The resolution was passed with 119 votes in favor, 49 abstentions and 7 against. Have you eaten your chopsticks once you’re done with meals?

YASHIRO, Oct. 28 ― You can eat disposable chopsticks once you’re done with meals. Farmers in Yashiro, Kumamoto prefecture have developed their rush, called igusa, the primary material in tatami, into pairs of “tatami-flavored” edible chopsticks. A tatami is a type of mat used as a flooring material in traditional Japanese-style rooms. The chopsticks are made from flour, sugar, eggs and igusa powder, which gives you a crunchy texture. A pack of five pairs of chopsticks are 1,930 yen and now available online. The Yashiro farmers now hope to promote their locally grown rush at a time its demand for tatami rooms has been declining in Japan.

New labeling standards “Japan Wine” become effective

TOKYO, Oct. 30 ― As more Japanese consumers enjoy drinking wine and producers make more wines in Japan, the government has introduced on Oct. 30 new labeling rules that enforces tighter place of origin control for Japanese wines. Japan didn’t previously have regulations on the labeling of wine made from grapes, so makers of Japanese wineries had the industry’s voluntary wine labeling standards. Specifically, when they produced and bottled wines in Japan but using imported grapes, they labeled them as “Wine produced in Japan,” which experts say is misleading consumers.
