【News】 Non-approved GM wheat found in Oregon; USDA takes the situation “very seriously” (May 31, 2013)

  The United States Department of Agriculture announced Wednesday, May 29 (Thursday, May 30 Japan time), that unapproved genetically modified wheat was discovered in a farm in Oregon, a northwestern state of the U.S. The wheat found in Oregon is resistant to herbicides. “We are taking this situation very seriously,” said Michael Firko of USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service, adding that they have launched an investigation to determine the circumstances, such as the range of its growth, in detail. 90% of wheat grown in Oregon is exported to other countries including Japan. 【News】 Japan recognized as having lowest BSE risk, a move to pave the way for expanding beef exports (May 30, 2013)

  The World Organization for Animal Health on Tuesday, May 28 (Wednesday, May 29, Japan time), recognized Japan as having “negligible risk” of BSE, bovine spongiform encephalopathy, which means Japanese beef is classified into the safest category with regard to the disease. The organization’s decision came as the Japanese government and industry made thoroughgoing efforts in implementing safety measures and regulating cattle feed. The Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries plans to appeal the safety of Japanese beef at home and abroad, and the recognition will give Japan a rationale to ask the countries which have banned imports of Japanese-raised beef to drop their embargo. 【News】 Anti-TPP professors say tariff cuts will lead to JPY 10.5 trillion drop in production and 1.9 million job losses (May 23, 2013)

  A group of some 900 university professors and researchers announced on Wednesday, May 22, their own estimate of the possible economic impacts of joining the Trans-Pacific Partnership free-trade talks. They estimated that the production in the agricultural sector and related industries together could decline by 10.54 trillion yen, calculated on the assumption that tariffs on 33 agricultural items are immediately scrapped, the same simulation adopted by the Japanese government in estimating the impacts. Five third-year girl students of Kochi Prefectural Agricultural High School transformed into magical girls are actively campaigning to liven up the local Gotenmachi shopping area of Nangoku, Kochi Prefecture. Veggie’s Farm Girls, dressed in cute outfits and blond wigs resembling characters in a popular anime “Pretty Cure,” are becoming popular among girls in the area. The pioneer local hero in the Gomenmachi shopping area is a super hero group named “Gomenger,” who enjoy overwhelming popularity among children.   Japan’s Central Union of Agricultural Cooperatives (JA Zenchu) and the United States’ National Farmers Union issued a joint statement on Wednesday, May 15 (Tuesday, May 14, U.S. time), to express strong concerns over negotiations for the Trans-Pacific Partnership free-trade framework. It noted that agriculture must be treated differently from other economic sectors in trade agreements, due to the fundamental importance of food security, rural economies and cultural considerations.
