【News】 Fukushima women work to restore farmlands with hopes of resuming farming (Nov. 12, 2013)

Some 80 women farmers stand in a long line to pick up debris on a field. They are members of the regional agriculture restoration cooperative in Odaka district of Minamisoma, Fukushima Prefecture which was seriously hit by the March 2011 tsunami. Two years and eight months after the disaster, there are still 232 members, including those in their 80s, in the cooperative which was established to support people who hope to start farming again. Since the district is within the evacuation zone surrounding the Fukushima No.1 nuclear power plant and staying in the area overnight is prohibited, the restoration work can be done only in daytime. 【News】 Japanese government to welcome foreign visitors with Japanese food and agritourism during the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics (Nov. 9, 2013)

  The Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries announced Friday, Nov. 8, that the government will publicize Japanese agricultural products and rural villages during the 2020 Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games, when many foreign people are expected to visit Japan. The ministry hopes that Japanese food and agricultural experiences in rural villages will appeal to foreign athletes, journalists and tourists, eventually leading to expanding demand for Japanese agricultural products abroad. The ministry submitted the plan at a joint meeting of the ministry’s headquarters to promote the aggressive agriculture, forestry and fisheries industry and heads of regional agricultural administration offices. 【News】 Australian agricultural industry stuck on tariff elimination without exception (Nov. 8, 2013)

  Kika Yamauchi – Canberra The delegation of Japan Agricultural Cooperatives (JA) group to Australia met representatives of the Australian agricultural industry on Thursday, Nov. 11, and reasserted their concern that increase of imports would lead to decline in Japan’s food self-sufficiency rate. Duncan Fraser, President of the National Farmers’ Federation who attended the meeting along with 13 other officials representing associations of agricultural items, said they have told the Australian government that they do not accept exceptions in eliminating tariffs in the Trans-Pacific Partnership free-trade talks. 【News】 Akiba maids harvest rice and vegetables with cheers (Nov. 8, 2013)

10 women, including “maids,” or waitresses working at costume play cafes in Akihabara, Tokyo, and animation voice actors, harvested carrots, ginger and bucket-planted rice on the roof of The Japan Agricultural News building in Akihabara on Thursday, Nov. 7. The women cheerfully picked the vegetables and cut rice plants with scissors without caring about their costumes getting stained by dirt. “I have never experienced the smell of soil, so I really enjoyed harvesting,” one of them said with a smile. 【News】 Agricultural ministry proposes ending rice production adjustment program in five years (Nov. 7, 2013)

  The Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries on Wednesday, November 6, proposed revising the rice production adjustment program and abolishing subsidies paid to farmers who meet the limit in rice paddy usage. The plan, unveiled during a meeting of the Liberal Democratic Party’s agricultural policies project team, stated that starting next year, the government would gradually cut subsidies of JPY 15,000 per 10 ares offered to rice farmers who have managed to reduce paddy usage to meet government-set goals. The subsidies would eventually disappear in fiscal 2018.
