Shingo Oka In Hokkaido, which produces half of the total raw milk supply in the nation, farmers and primary agricultural cooperatives are working to recover decline in the region’s milk production due to the increasing number of people giving up farming. Dairy farmers are actively promoting their products to consumers, while agricultural cooperatives are setting up dairy products companies to maintain the number of cows and create employment opportunities. The government’s Council for Regulatory Reform has called for drastic deregulation in establishing agricultural production corporations which can own farmlands. The proposal goes against the recent trend where farmland transactions are largely shifting from selling to lending under the revised Agricultural Land Law and the farmland consolidation banks established this fiscal year. The idea apparently reflects strong request from the business community to allow farmland acquisition by private companies. Kotaro Yamada – Tsukagoshi Flower Festival (Chichibu-shi, Saitama Prefecture) In the Tsukagoshi district of Kamiyoshida, Chichibu, Saitama Prefecture, there is a traditional spring festival called Hana Matsuri (flower festival). It’s literally a flowery festivity to gather flowers from around the village and scatter them in the local shrine. That way, people celebrate the birth of Buddha but the festival itself is all carried out by local children. The tradition has actually been handed down from the Edo period by children in the village. Hana Matsuri is held in early May every year.
