【News】 Government panel head stresses need to take away legal auditing authority of agricultural co-op unions (Dec. 16, 2014)

  As the government works to submit a bill to the next yeakar’s ordinary Diet session to revise the Agricultural Co-operative Society Law, Motoyuki Oka, head of the government’s Regulatory Reform Council, said on Monday, Dec. 15 that the panel will strongly urge the government to abolish legal authority of agricultural co-operatives’ central and prefectural unions to audit member co-ops (JAs). At the panel’s meeting held earlier in the day, the panel’s agriculture working group submitted its proposals regarding the review of agricultural co-ops. 【News】 Mie University team develops biofuel from unconsumed tangerines (Dec. 6, 2014)

  Yasuhiko Tateishi A research team of Mie University Graduate School of Bioresources, headed by Professor Hiroshi Tamaru, has developed a technology to turn tangerines into biobutanol, which can be used as a substitute for gasoline. Compared with ethanol, which is a widely-used alternative energy produced from biomass, butanol has higher energy output. It is also less corrosive than ethanol so there should be fewer problems using existing storage and handling infrastructure for gasoline. The fuel is created by putting damaged or rotten tangerines which have become unsuitable for sale into a tank unskinned, along with microorganisms. 【News】 African countries called for urgent solution for the sharp decline of international cotton prices (Dec. 5, 2014)

  Satoko Adachi-Geneva In the Doha Round (multilateral trade negotiations) of The World Trade Organization (WTO), four cotton-producing countries in West Africa, which have called for solutions for the problem of cotton subsidies, insisted Friday, Nov. 28, on the need for early settlement of the round because the most recent decline of the international cotton prices has severely affected the farmers in those countries. The problem of cotton subsidies is one of the pending issues among the least developed countries. Kotaro Yamada – Vegetable Treasure Ship (Mishima-shi, Shizuoka Prefecture)  – The Youth Group of the Mishima Kannami Agricultural Cooperatives (JA Mishima Kannami) and the Young Entrepreneurs Group (YEG) of the Commerce and Industry of Mishima (CCI Mishima) have joined hands to promote local agricultural produce. They dedicate a wooden boat packed with locally-grown vegetables to the Mishima Taisha Shrine in Mishima-shi, Shizuoka Prefecture, on November 23, the day of Niinamesai harvest festival, successfully making it a new attraction of the festival.
