【News】 “TPP 11” negotiators agree only on continuous talks on implementation of U.S.-less trade pact (May 5, 2017)

The first working level meeting of so-called TPP 11, a Trans-Pacific Partnership without the United States, was held on May 2-3 at Toronto, Canada. After the meeting, the chief Japanese negotiator for the TPP, Keiichi Katakami, told the press that TPP’s eleven member countries will continue to pursue an appropriate direction of their future talks, saying “We eleven countries could agree to move discussions forward so as not to lose the momentum of the TPP.” The Japanese government aims at making an agreement among the eleven member countries of the TPP so that the existing TPP free trade deal should take effect without overhauling the pact. More than 20 people from 12 countries, including bureaucrats, executives of agricultural organizations, officials of nonprofit organizations and university faculty members, participated in the workshop. JA Group, a nationwide business and organizational network of agricultural cooperatives (JAs) in Japan opened an online platform named “One-stop service center for export promotion” on May 1. The “One-stop service center” managed jointly by JA’s national organizations started to play a role of the portal website for JAs that are interested in exporting agricultural products by accepting JAs’ applications for experimental sales in overseas markets. 【News】 World Bonsai Convention successfully held in Saitama city, Japan (April 29, 2017)

The eighth World Bonsai Convention was held in Saitama city, Japan, during four days from April 27. Venues of the Convention have been crowded every day with a number of visitors including lovers of Bonsai or potted miniature trees, who came to Japan from various countries to see “Bonsais at the home of Bonsai.” More than 300 Bonsai trees were displayed at the Convention Center, highlighting a nearly 400-year-old Bonsai that has been exhibited at the Imperial Palace since the Edo period.
