【Editorial】 Election candidates should discuss TPP in their own words (July 17, 2013)
With only a few days left before the Upper House election, the focus remains on whether the Liberal Democratic Party and its coalition partner New Komeito, which already control the more powerful Lower House, can finally put an end to the divided Diet by winning a majority in the Upper House. Much less attention is paid on the actual policy debates, and almost no discussion has been made on strategies concerning the Trans-Pacific Partnership free-trade talks, which is one of the top priority policies. Farmers have virtually no clue who they should trust and to whom they should cast their votes. Candidates should discuss in their own words their … Continue reading

The University of Shizuoka, a major beverage firm ITO EN and a social welfare service corporation Hakujujikai have confirmed through a research that taking green tea powder every day would help improve cognitive functioning of patients of dementia. The three institutions jointly conducted the research from July to September last year on 12 men and women, out of which 8 are patients with vascular dementia, 3 with Alzheimer’s disease and 1 with dementia with Lewy bodies. They ground green tea leaves … Continue reading

【Editorial】 Potential economic impact of TPP – Don’t think it is somebody else’s problem, it could very well be yours (July 13, 2013)
A group of anti-TPP professors came up with their own estimates on the economic impact of the Trans-Pacific Partnership free-trade talks. They estimated how tariff eliminations under the TPP pact will affect agricultural production and income in each prefecture. They also analyzed in detail the possible effects on rice farmers and related industries. Their estimates revealed that major agricultural producing prefectures will suffer severe damage, and that even large-scale rice farmers will be in the red. With the Upper House election coming up, the issues concerning the TPP talks should be discussed more from the viewpoint of farming business and local economies. The economic effects of the TPP pact … Continue reading

【News】 Japanese beef calf prices in June rise to the highest level in six years due to tight supply (July 12, 2013)
Prices of Japanese beef calves are continuing to show an unprecedented uptrend, due to supply shortage following the outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease in 2010 and the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami. The average price of a calf marked 478,972 yen in June, up 19.6% from a year before, marking the highest level for June since 2007, according to the National Federation of Agricultural Cooperative Associations (JA Zen-noh). The prices are expected to continue their strong performance, as there are few factors that can contribute to price declines. The number of beef calves traded in the nation’s 39 designated markets totaled 26,091 head in June, rising 3% from a year … Continue reading
