【Opinion】The end of global capitalism has begun (Nov. 28, 2016)
[By Tatsuru Uchida, Philosopher and Martial artist] U.S. president-elect Donald Trump has announced his intention to withdraw from the Trans-Pacific Partnership trade deal on his first day in office. Although the TPP framework was a policy led by the United States, all of the major candidates in the presidential election expressed opposition to the deal in their campaign pledges. Meanwhile in Japan, the Liberal Democratic Party had been clearly against the TPP framework in the 2012 general election, but made a complete turnaround after the election to eagerly promote the framework. Policy shifts in Japan and the U.S. What do the policy shifts in Japan and the U.S. represent? If … Continue reading

【News】 Foreign skilled workers likely to be allowed to work for Japanese farmers in national strategic special zones in fiscal 2017 (Dec. 13, 2016)
The Japanese Government decided on December 12 to allow skilled workers from abroad to work on farms in national strategic special zones. The government plans to submit an amendment to the related law during the next ordinary Diet session early next year, aiming at an application of the amended law in fiscal 2017. Applicants for the new system will be limited to foreign workers who have studied professional knowledge on agriculture. They will be able to work for agricultural corporations and other farmers in three to five years. Around 24,000 unskilled foreign workers are now employed by Japanese farmers under the foreign trainee system. Japan’s Ministry of Justice has not … Continue reading

【Editorial】Let’s fight together against the attack on cooperatives (Nov. 29, 2016)
The recent turmoil over a report by the government’s Regulatory Reform Promotion Council on agriculture cooperatives reform, filled with irrational arguments, was settled after some maneuvering by the ruling Liberal Democratic Party. Radical and extreme phrases were deleted from the report for the time being, but it is highly likely that attacks on cooperatives will continue in the future. In response, cooperatives at home and abroad issued statements of protest against the report, calling for the need to protect the organizations’ core principles of autonomy and independence. The government and the LDP should take them seriously. Cooperative organizations around the world are furious and are alarmed by the situation. The … Continue reading

【News】 Japan’s Diet ratifies TPP trade pact without any prospect for enforcement: U.S. likely to quit TPP next January (Dec. 10, 2016)
Japan’s House of Councilors ratified the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) free trade pact and approved its related legislation on December 9, after the Upper House’s TPP Special Committee approved the TPP trade deal and related bills on the same day, where the ruling camp supported the TPP agreement to overcome resistance from the opposition parties. Meanwhile the TPP pact has considerably dim prospects of taking effect, since the United States President-elect Donald Trump has repeatedly said he will withdraw his government from the pact. On the other hand, there still remain concerns that U.S. government will force TPP member countries to reopen the negotiations, or talks on Japan-U.S. free trade agreement … Continue reading

【News】 JA ZENCHU’s survey shows steady increase in female executives of agricultural cooperatives in Japan (Dec. 9, 2016)
A survey conducted by JA ZENCHU (Central Union of Agricultural Cooperatives), an apex organization of agricultural cooperatives (JAs) in Japan, revealed that a number of JAs’ female executives (board members, members of management supervisory committees, and auditors) totaled 1,305 as of the end of July 2016. The national total number decreased by one person over the last year because of amalgamations of agricultural cooperatives. Female officers occupy 7.5 percent of the national total of JAs’ executives, o.3 percent up. An average number of the female executives per JA accounts 1.98 women, getting close to a current target of two female officers at each JA which has been set up by … Continue reading
