The Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries has discovered through recent investigation that numerous counterfeit Japanese food products of well-known brands are sold overseas, including Yubari melons made in Thailand and Kobe beef made in Australia. Because such false use of geographical indications can hamper exports of Japanese food products, the ministry is stepping up efforts to sign mutual GI protection agreements with foreign governments so that they can crack down on them abroad. 【News】 Japan to enhance supervision over foreign workers, extending maximum training period to five years this November (April 5, 2017)
The Government of Japan decided at an April 4 Cabinet meeting to enforce on November 1 the “Technical Intern Training Program Law” revised to enhance the supervision of companies, farmers and other organizations accepting foreign workers under the governmental technical intern trainee program. The Law provides for penalties if the employer of foreign trainee workers abuses their human rights by forcing them with illegal long hour works and the like. Under the revised Law, the maximum length for employment of foreign trainee workers will be extended from the existing three years to five years. The Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF) made a march 28 announcement of farmers’ opinion poll on business activities of multi-purpose agricultural cooperatives (JAs) which are engaged in various business activities. More than 80 percent of farmers polled answered that it will be continuously necessary for the agricultural cooperatives to provide services to their member farmers with businesses such as marketing of agricultural and livestock products, supplying production inputs and banking, as well as farm guidance. 【News】Beef cattle breeding resumes in Katsurao, Fukushima Prefecture, six years after the nuclear disaster (March 31, 2017)
On March 30, 49 breeding cows and calves were returned to the village of Katsurao in Fukushima Prefecture for the first time since the entire village was evacuated following the 2011 accident at the Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant. It is the largest number of cows coming back to a municipality which had been designated as a no-go zone. Cattle breeders, who had been conducting decontamination works ever since the evacuation order was lifted in the village in June, are happy to resume their business after six years. The Government of Japan set up a new organization named “Japan Food Product Overseas Promotion Center” or JFOODO on April 1 for the purpose of strengthening its promotion activities to boost exports of agricultural, forestry, fishery and food products. Campaigns for sales promotion of Japanese foods have been carried out mostly in such forms as trade fairs and business talk events, which have not necessarily been successful in achieving adequate results of publicity activities for overseas consumers, because those campaigns were independently organized by the national government and respective local administrations.
