【Opinion】Independence essential for agricultural cooperatives (May 2, 2017)

[By Masaru Yamada, The Japan Agricultural News Special Senior Writer] Last week, Tokyo-based Asian Productivity Organization held a five-day workshop in Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh, to discuss development of Asian rural villages and the role of farmers’ cooperatives. More than 20 people from 12 countries, including bureaucrats, executives of agricultural organizations, officials of nonprofit organizations and university faculty members, participated in the workshop. It was surprising to see that although the goal of the workshop was to reaffirm the role of cooperatives in increasing the value of agriculture, many of the attendants voiced criticism over the current farm coops. 【News】 Japan’s agricultural cooperative organizations launch “One-stop service center for export promotion” on their website (April 30, 2017)

JA Group, a nationwide business and organizational network of agricultural cooperatives (JAs) in Japan opened an online platform named “One-stop service center for export promotion” on May 1. The “One-stop service center” managed jointly by JA’s national organizations started to play a role of the portal website for JAs that are interested in exporting agricultural products by accepting JAs’ applications for experimental sales in overseas markets. 【News】 World Bonsai Convention successfully held in Saitama city, Japan (April 29, 2017)

The eighth World Bonsai Convention was held in Saitama city, Japan, during four days from April 27. Venues of the Convention have been crowded every day with a number of visitors including lovers of Bonsai or potted miniature trees, who came to Japan from various countries to see “Bonsais at the home of Bonsai.” More than 300 Bonsai trees were displayed at the Convention Center, highlighting a nearly 400-year-old Bonsai that has been exhibited at the Imperial Palace since the Edo period. 【News】Good-looking animated personifications of Japanese rice brands gaining popularity, encouraging young Japanese to eat more rice (Apr. 27, 2017)

Cartoon programs featuring rice-themed characters are rising in popularity. One features a group of moe-type cute female characters and another a team of good-looking male personifications of popular Japanese rice brands, for example, both in order to develop a fondness for rice among young Japanese who are increasingly moving away from rice. The Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries of Japan has decided to use the anime characters on its official posters to promote Japanese food overseas, and the potential of those characters as new promotional tools are drawing attention. 【News】Intellectual Property Strategy Headquarters to block unauthorized cultivation of Japanese agricultural crops in foreign countries (April 27, 2017)

The Japanese government decided on April 26 to strengthen its support measures to be taken for variety registration of Japanese agricultural crops in foreign countries. The measures aim at protecting Japanese breeders’ rights of marketing seeds, plants and harvests of the crops concerned by registering the plant patents with overseas authorities in order to block unauthorized cultivation of those crops in foreign countries. The government plans to revise its Intellectual Property Promotion Plan next month, in which the new support measures are to be put into practice.
