Japan’s ruling LDP members setting to promote pickle exports
TOKYO, Dec. 7 — Members of Japan’s governing Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) have set up a group to promote pickles in overseas markets on the back of growing interest in Japanese cuisine, apart from that old icon sushi. Tsukemono are Japanese vegetables preserved in pickling ingredients such as salt, sake or vinegar, giving a delicious and crunchy taste. The LDP group, consisting of 23 members, will propose a policy to support farmers who grow the key vegetables of tsukemono. These include Japanese radish and Chinese cabbage. Japan unveils final list of GI for foods in EU trade agreement
TOKYO, Dec. 16 — The agriculture ministry has unveiled a final list of food names that will be protected under geographical indications (GI) in the recently agreed trade deal between Japan and the EU. The list aims to help farmers from both Japan and the EU to exclusively market their own products, but which the United States may call protectionism. AKITA, Dec. 18 — The display of an enormous Christmas tree made of locally-grown poinsettia plants began at Brume Messe Akita, drawing the attention of visitors to the public roadside complex in Katagami city, Akita Prefecture. The 5-meter tall tower of the poinsettia is now on display in a greenhouse in the Prefectural flower and seedling center in the complex. It uses approximately 1,000 pots of poinsettia plants sourced from local farmers, and the pots are fixed into the holes in a frame made with latticed panels. Japanese government to cut mark-up on wheat imports by 45%
TOKYO, Dec. 7 — Japan will slash its current mark-up prices on imported wheat, a move to lower the cost of imported wheat for Japanese millers, informed sources have said. It will help Japanese millers to compete with European-made wheat products such as biscuits, cookies and pastas. The government decided to cut its current 17 yen a kilogram mark-up on imported wheat for biscuits and cookies, by 45 percent. Japan unveils food export strategy to attract foreign interests
TOKYO, Dec. 2 — A government-backed agency that promotes Japanese food exports has identified its first 7 products seen as having great potential to penetrate global markets. The Japan Food Product Overseas Promotion Center (JFOODO) unveiled on Dec. 1 its first export strategy for 7 agriculture sectors: wagyu beef, rice flour, green tea, sake, wine, craft beer and fishery products. JFOODO now plans to allocate spending on promotion and advertising in different foreign media from February 2018. It will also increase product lines to expand exports.
