【News】 Dairy cows rescued from earthquake-collapsed barns suffering from mastitis in Kumamoto prefecture (April 21, 2016)

Dairy farming has been heavily damaged in Kumamoto prefecture continuously rocked by a powerful earthquake and aftershocks since April 14. In Nishihara-mura some farmers had a hard time rescuing their dairy cows from under the quake-collapsed barns. Dairy farmers could not milk their cows with milking machines in several days after the earthquake because of a power failure in their village. Their cows have got infected with mastitis one after the other. And farmers are now forced to dispose fresh milk even though they manage to resume milking their cows. “I could not milk my cows three days. 【News】 Watermelon shipment resumes encouraging earthquake-hit farmers in JA Kamimashiki area, Kumamoto prefecture (April 19, 2016)

Kamimashiki Agricultural Cooperative (JA), headquartered at one of the hardest-hit areas by the latest Kumamoto huge earthquake, Kosa-machi, Kumamoto prefecture, resumed operations at its watermelon grading facility on April 18, which had been suspended since the earthquake rocked the area on April 14. Watermelons produced by the JA member farmers were graded by hands of JA staff members and some producers living near the facility, while an automatic grading machine was broken by the heavy tremors. Hard works of loading trucks bound for markets with sorted watermelons were also done by them. 【News】 MAFF to find out untapped farm product in every prefecture with Geographical Indication Protection Program by 2020 (April 10, 2016)

Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF) revealed the latest target of its Geographical Indication (GI) protection program protecting names of agricultural and food products as intellectual properties which have unique brand values of specific regions. It will be a new target of the GI Protection System for MAFF to persuade each of 47 prefectures in the country to register at least one product under the System over the next five years through 2020. The System aims to protect names of farm products as GI properties obtaining high quality and reputation as a result of traditional production methods and climate characteristics in specific agricultural areas. Drivers of electric vehicles, running not on gasoline, but with an electric motor as a power source, have been steadily increasing in rural societies. Infrastructure for spreading electric automobiles has been consolidated in agricultural areas, enabling drivers to quickly charge their electric vehicles even at offices of an agricultural cooperative (JA) and farmer’s markets. Yoshinori Yokota, 51, producing blueberries at Shiranuka-cho in Hokkaido, sometimes drives as long as 150 kilometers per day to deliver his fresh blueberries and processed products.
