[Opinion] Abolishing the designated producers system for raw milk distribution unbeneficial for producers, distributors and consumers (April 16, 2016)
<The Japan Agricultural News has asked Nobuhiro Suzuki, professor of the University of Tokyo’s Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, to contribute an article to evaluate a recent recommendation by an agricultural working group of the government’s Regulatory Reform Council. The group proposed abolishing the nation’s raw milk distribution system, in which regional dairy co-operatives designated by the government collect milk from local dairy farmers, then negotiate with and sell the produce to dairy companies.> It is extremely inefficient to collect and sell raw milk in small units, as it is highly perishable. Such an inefficient system would confuse dairy farmers, distributors, dairy product manufacturers and retailers, and it would … Continue reading

Theft cases of wheel loaders, machines to move aside or load heavy materials, have been increasing at dairy farms where the loaders are used to mix up cow’s manure for production of organic fertilizers. Most of the wheel loaders targeted in robbery are old-fashioned models, which are commonly not installed with the global positioning system (GPS) as an anti-theft device. An overall picture of the theft cases has not been obtained. But these cases have occurred most frequently in Shizuoka prefecture. According to a prompt report of the Shizuoka Prefectural Police Department, 19 wheel loaders of livestock farmers were stolen during a period from January to late April, exceeding the … Continue reading

Assuming the worst case scenario, it could be less than thirty percent.” In the JA Aso area deadly hit by the second powerful earthquake … Continue reading

It has turned out that a number of bulk feed tanks owned by farmers feeding beef cattle or pigs were bitterly damaged or destroyed by a powerful earthquake and its numerous aftershocks since April 14 in Kumamoto prefecture.
