【News】 MAFF to further increase butter imports by 4000 tons due to possible decline in milk supplies by Typhoons (Sep. 28, 2016)

The Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF) announced a plan to increase butter imports by 4,000 tons on September 27. MAFF’s plan has been worked out on its precise assumption that the domestic market of milk will be further tightened because a hot-summer climate and damages by typhoons possibly bring about falls in milk supplies during coming months. The total import of butter is expected to hit a record of 17 thousand tons in fiscal 2016. A number of blunders were recently found in the government’s Japanese translation of Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) documents. Shinzo Abe’s administration and ruling parties wish to search for an early solution to the problem by submitting a list of mistranslations for the TPP documents to the Diet so that the deliberation can be resumed to gain the Diet approval for the TPP free trade pact as early as possible. 【News】 Dahlia named “Carp’s Lovely Flower” debuts in Hiroshima prefecture to celebrate Hiroshima Carp capturing Central League pennant (Sep. 23, 2016)

At a tourist farm operated by a farming corporation called “Sera Highlands Farm” in Sera-cho, Hiroshima prefecture, a new variety of dahlia debuted at its “Autumn Dahlia Festival in 2016,” which is to be open at the farm until October 23. The dahlia was named “Koi-bana” (literally, “Carp’s Lovely Flower”) after the Hiroshima Toyo Carp, one of the professional baseball teams of the Central League in Japan, winning the league championship on September 10 for the first time in 25 years. 【News】Giant, seedless grapes shipped in Nagano Prefecture (Sept.16,2016)

A farmer of Nagano Prefecture shipped for the first time this year Tears Red, a new variety of grapes that is about the size of a plum. The average weight of a Tears Red berry is about 50 grams, with some growing to a near-record level of 5 centimeters in diameter and weighing more than 100 grams, compared with an average weight of 15 to 20 grams for large-size grapes. The grapes can be eaten without peeling. 【News】 Maximum of 3600 yen per 60-kg rice bag of “Adjustment money” paid to wholesalers: Sources tell to Japan Agri. News (Sep. 23, 2016)

In shady transactions of intentionally mispriced rice imported under the state-controlled “simultaneous buy and sell” (SBS) system, it was revealed on September 22, one of rice wholesalers in western Japan had been paid by trading houses a maximum of around 60 yen per kilogram of rice under the context of what they call “adjustment money.” The amount of the “adjustment money” is converted to some 3600 yen per “hyo,” 60-kilogram sack of rice. With the “adjustment money” paid by trading firms, the wholesaler sold the SBS imported rice to users of the food service industry at prices lower than successful bid prices announced by the Government.
