【Editorial】 Japanese-professors fight against TPP – Close coordination and presentation of their wisdom and intellect can become a strong force to stop TPP (April 12, 2013)

A campaign against the Trans-Pacific Partnership free-trade talks has gained a strong reinforcement. University professors across the nation together stood up against Japan’s participation in the TPP negotiations, supported by nearly 1,000 members of the country’s academic community. On Tuesday, April 9, they submitted to Prime Minister Shinzo Abe a petition calling for revocation of his announcement to join the TPP talks and withdrawal from the preliminary negotiations. They expressed a strong will to work with other groups and people to continue the campaign against the TPP until the government decides to walk away from the negotiating table. The members are experts on the TPP negotiations and have a … Continue reading

【News】 Imports of products in the key areas of negotiation for the TPP mostly from the current TPP member countries (April 10, 2013)

Imports of the agricultural, forestry and fishery products which the Liberal Democratic Party wants to protect as the key areas for Japan’s national interests are coming mostly from the TPP participants such as the United States and Australia it was learned from the Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Ministry’s data. As for wheat, beef and pork, almost all of the imports are from the TPP member countries. If Asian countries negotiating for the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) and European Union member countries negotiating for the Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA) are included, the same is true for imports of other products such as rice. If Japan participates in the TPP … Continue reading

【Editorial】 Japan should not allow USTR’s foreign trade barriers, unfair intervention (April 3, 2013)

Office of the United States Trade Representative submitted the 2013 National Trade Estimate Report on Foreign Trade Barriers to U.S. President Barack Obama and Congress. Concerning Japan, the report lists issues of concern in such sectors as automobile and insurance, the areas which are addressed in the preliminary negotiations between Japan and the U.S. on Japan’s participation in the Trans-Pacific Partnership free-trade talks. The report also includes demands which could go against the campaign pledges concerning the TPP that the Liberal Democratic Party made in the Lower House elections last year. The Japanese government should not allow the U.S. to interfere unjustly in internal policies. The U.S. demand which … Continue reading

【News】 Abe declares Japan will join TPP (March 16, 2013)

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe formally announced Friday, March 15, in a press conference at his official residence that Japan will take a seat at the negotiating table for the Trans-Pacific Partnership free-trade talks. Abe explained that it “is the last chance” for Japan to take part in the rule-making process of a free trade framework in the Asia-Pacific region, and expressed determination to defend the nation’s interests, saying that the government will “protect what should be protected, and gain what should be gained.” There is no guarantee, however, that the key agricultural products, which the Liberal Democratic Party indicated as exceptions, will be exempted from tariff elimination, and the … Continue reading

【Editorial】 Joining the TPP negotiations is abandonment of national sovereignty (March 16, 2013)

We strongly protest and denounce Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s announcement to join the TPP (Trans-Pacific Partnership) talks. The announcement is an outrage against public sentiment and it is clearly against his campaign promise. The TPP is an agreement which undoubtedly goes against Japan’s national interest and could lead to collapsing of the nation’s system, and proceeding with the talks in such a forceful and uncertain way is equivalent to an abandonment of national sovereignty. It is extremely regrettable that the government has rushed into making a decision on the issue related to the nation’s fundamentals without any disclosure of the decision making process or enough national debate on the … Continue reading
