【News】 New Zealand industry minister urges Japan to fully liberalize its market (Nov. 6, 2013)
Kika Yamauchi – Wellington New Zealand’s Primary Industries Minister Hon Nathan Guy told a delegation of the Japan Agricultural Cooperatives group that New Zealand continues to maintain its stance of eliminating all tariffs without exception in the Trans-Pacific Partnership free-trade talks. Responding to the delegation’s explanation that tariffs on key Japanese agricultural products should be kept, Guy showed understanding for Japan’s domestic circumstances, but stressed his hope that the TPP members will reach a comprehensive and high-quality agreement. In a meeting with Guy, Toshiaki Tobita, vice president of the Central Union of Agricultural Cooperatives (JA Zenchu) who heads the delegation, explained that the JA group is strongly urging the … Continue reading

【Editorial】 Radical reform led by Abe risks leading the nation in the wrong direction (Nov. 1, 2013)
We see danger in how Prime Minister Shinzo Abe runs his administration. Backed by high approval rates and the giant ruling bloc, Diet members are also making their way at Abe’s pace. In the current extraordinary Diet session, agricultural policy reform came up as an important issue, along with other major bills such as the state secrets protection bill. The problem is the overhasty way which the agricultural reform is dealt with, lacking sufficient discussion. Prime Minister’s Office suddenly shoots up radical measures such as abolishing the rice production adjustment program or revising the Japan Agricultural Cooperatives Law, and leads the discussion to make them broadly recognized. Their way … Continue reading

The Central Union of Agricultural Co-operatives (JA-Zenchu) announced Tuesday, October 29, that the Japan Agricultural Cooperatives (JA) group and Keidanren, an influential business lobby also known as the Japan Business Federation, will establish a working group to strengthen cooperation between business and agricultural sectors. 【News】 Malaysia’s chief negotiator says TPP pact should be flexible (Oct. 26, 2013)
J. Jayasiri, Malaysia’s chief negotiator for the Trans-Pacific Partnership free-trade talks, said Thursday, October 24, that the TPP agreement should be flexible, taking into account member countries’ domestic situations. In a meeting with the delegation of the Japan Agricultural Cooperatives (JA) group to Malaysia, Jayasiri also said it would be unrealistic for the TPP members to try to strike a deal by the end of this year, considering that there still remain many difficulties in a number of fields. Malaysia has been at odds with the United States in the TPP negotiations in such areas as intellectual property protection rules and competition policy, and Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak … Continue reading

【News】 LDP will not disclose results of its examination on eliminating tariffs on key agricultural products, official says (Oct. 23, 2013)
Koya Nishikawa, head of the Liberal Democratic Party’s panel on the Trans-Pacific Partnership free-trade talks, said Monday, October 21, that the party does not plan to announce the results of examining effects of cutting tariffs until the talks are concluded. In a BS Fuji television program, Nishikawa said the party does not want to show Japan’s hands to the United States, as the TPP negotiations are expected to speed up towards the goal of striking a deal in the end of this year. But it is highly likely that farmers will be concerned over the confidentiality of the process all the more. Nishikawa said he will report the results … Continue reading
