【News】 Japanese wagyu beef calf price soars, topping JPY700,000 in average for the first time (Dec. 3, 2015)
The average price of Japanese wagyu beef calves topped JPY700,000 for the first time in November, according to the National Federation of Agricultural Cooperative Associations’ (JA Zen-Noh) data on calf trading at major livestock markets nationwide. The price rose by as much as 50 percent in the last two years. Market participants attribute the price rise to increased purchase of calves by cattle fattening farms which shipped cattle ahead of the period of highest demand, while the supply continued to be sluggish due to a decline in the number of cattle breeding farms. “Prices of dressed carcasses could drop below costs for cattle fattening farms, as the prices (of … Continue reading

The Ruling Liberal Democratic Party on Tuesday, Nov. 17, released a package of measures to assist farmers who are expected to be hit hard by market liberalization under the Trans-Pacific Partnership agreement. At a joint meeting of the party’s two committees dealing with agriculture, the party decided to call on the government to expand measures to help farmers, especially those who produce five key agricultural products such as rice, beef and pork. The package also includes cost-cutting and export-boosting measures to strengthen farming and make the sector a growth industry. 【Editorial】 Trans-Pacific Partnership agreement poses risk of triggering chain of market liberalization (Nov. 17, 2015)
A number of multinational summit meetings are scheduled this week. We should pay particular attention to the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation leaders’ meeting and the Trans-Pacific Partnership summit meeting which will be held on the sidelines of the APEC meeting. The two summit meetings will be the first to be held after the TPP member nations reached an agreement, and the meetings should be the place to discuss realistic trade liberalization on the premise of the diversity of the Asia-Pacific region. The agricultural market liberalization policies adopted under the TPP scheme are too extreme, and could lead to a large drop in the nation’s food self-sufficiency rate. The Group of … Continue reading

【News】 Country-of-origin labeling requirement for ingredients to be expanded for processed foods (Nov. 13, 2015)
The Consumer Affairs Agency on Thursday, Nov. 12, began discussing increasing the number of processed foods which are required to display where their ingredients originated from, as imports of agricultural and other food items are expected to increase under the Trans-Pacific Partnership free-trade agreement. The measure is aimed at providing more information for consumers who prefer buying foods which use home-grown farm items as ingredients. However, authorities are likely to have difficulty deciding to what extent the requirements should be expanded, as processed food manufacturers will voice opposition to the idea which could lead to cost increases. The agency officials, who revealed the policy at a meeting of the Liberal … Continue reading

【News】 Rice growers fear imported rice will take away share in the food service market – Chikusei, Ibaraki Prefecture (Nov. 7, 2015)
Satoshi Furusawa, a 58-year-old farmer who grows rice on some 30 hectares of paddies in Chikusei, Ibraki Prefecture, says he is increasingly concerned that under the Trans-Pacific Partnership free-trade agreement, domestically-grown rice will be forced out from the market for restaurants and ready-made foods. In the area where JA Kitatsukuba, a farm co-op in Chikusei, serves, rice farmers have recently been expanding sales channels to food service companies. As for table rice they harvested in 2015, 70 percent of the total annual yield of some 17,800 tons are sold to such companies. Their major brand Koshihikari is known for good taste, and it is popular among restaurants and convenience stores … Continue reading
