Climate change to cut crop output, cost $42 bln a year: report
TSUKUBA, Dec. 12 ― Climate change will lower average global output on key crops such as wheat, soybeans and maize, causing an annual loss of 42.4 billion dollars, according to a Japanese report that studied climate impacts on staple crops. The Tsukuba-based National Agriculture and Food Research Organization (NARO), together with the National Institute for Environmental Studies and the Meteorological Research Institute, released the report on Dec. 11. The report highlighted the agriculture sector is vulnerable to climate change and it’s now seen much more as an economic issue than a narrow environmental one. Maize production would have a loss of 22.3 billion yen a year, the biggest loser among … Continue reading

Japan’s gross agricultural production totals 9.3 trillion yen in 2017, marking three consecutive years of increase amid recovery in rice prices
TOKYO, Dec. 26 – Japan’s gross agricultural output totaled 9.2742 trillion yen in 2017, up 0.8 percent or 71.7 billion yen from the previous year, increasing three years in a row, the agriculture ministry said on Dec. 25. The farm production marked the largest amount since 2000 in terms of value. One of the main factors behind the increase was the recovery in prices of rice for human consumption, as many rice farmers shifted to production of rice for feed. However, decline in farm population and aging of farmers remain a problem, indicating an urgent need to strengthen the nation’s farm production. The 2017 output topped 9 trillion yen as … Continue reading

Pesticide residues detected in Philippine bananas, prompting Japan’s farm ministry to issue inspection orders to all importers
TOKYO, Dec. 20 – As many Philippine banana samples were recently found to contain pesticide residues at levels exceeding the legal limit, the agriculture ministry has issued inspection orders to all importers of Philippine bananas. It is the first time for the ministry to require inspection of all bananas imported from the Philippines by each shipment lot. The ministry says it is not decided when the measure will be lifted, and that the priority should be put on finding out why excessive residues were found. The orders were issued in the end of November. The ministry usually tests only a few percentages of the shipment lots, but inspections had been … Continue reading

Japan farm minister reaffirms not go beyond TPP limit on rice
TOKYO, Dec. 6 ― Japan’s Agriculture Minister Takamori Yoshikawa reaffirmed that his government will not go beyond the already historic concessions Tokyo had offered to Washington in the Trade-Pacific Partnership (TPP) at upcoming bilateral talks with the U.S. Testifying before the lower house of agriculture committee on Dec. 5, Yoshikawa told fellow parliamentarians: “Go beyond the TPP concessions is just unimaginable.” Japan and the U.S. is expected to kick off negotiations for a trade agreement on goods (TAG) as early as January 2019, and the U.S. President Donald Trump recently expressed a willingness to get “a substantially better TPP” deal. The U.S. rice industry, the largest rice exporter to Japan … Continue reading

Japanese government says no review for TPP’s beef safeguard
TOKYO, Dec. 1 ― The Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) without the U.S., known as TPP-11, is set to come into force on Dec. 30, and the Japanese government still insists that it will not review trade remedies even the U.S. return to the trade deal is unlikely to happen. After the U.S. withdrawal, 11 remaining members decided the best way to deal with the concerns was to put the controversial provisions on ice until the U.S. was to return. As a result, the TPP-11 has no changes from the original TPP for any of the current member commitments in areas like market access for agriculture products or trade remedies. But at … Continue reading
