Wagyu cut demonstration by 28-year-old Japanese master butcher in long-sleeved kimono fascinating the world
HYOGO, Jun.9 – A lady in traditional long-sleeve kimono had a beef sword in hand and swiftly cut a block of Wagyu beef like an artist. Marika Watanabe, 28, is a Japanese master butcher who travels worldwide to present her wagyu cutting demonstrations as a “wagyu kimono butcher.” She often talks with Wagyu beef producers in Japan as well. “I know the farmers raise cows with great care. I respect their efforts, so I must derive full value from their wagyu meat,” she said. There was a big block of Kobe beef sitting in front of her. She quickly tucked up her sleeves with a sash and cut the meat … Continue reading

Sudden death of legend breeding cattle leads to shortage of semen
TOKYO, June 6 — The Livestock Improvement Association of Japan announced on June 5 that Fukunohime, a Japanese black breeding bull kept by the association, died of acute heart failure on June 2 at the age of 10 years and 10 months. Fukunohime has been known as a “super breeding bull” for its ability to produce calves with high growth performance and carcass yield. His progenies have been the price setter at calf trading markets nationwide and achieved good results at national carcass contests. The association says there are not enough semen stocks left to meet the current demand. Fukunohime was born in Otawara, Tochigi Prefecture. His father is Yoshinokuni … Continue reading

Japan’s rice exports rise 40% year-on-year amid bad harvest in the U.S.
TOKYO, May 31 — Japan’s exports of rice this year are increasing at a pace of more than 40 percent from a year before, exceeding last year’s strong growth. The rise is driven mainly by shipments to the United States. With prices of U.S.-grown rice rising sharply due to drought, orders for Japanese rice are going up as the weak yen makes the product look reasonably priced. At stores in the U.S., some U.S. rice products ended up being priced higher than Japanese rice. The key to further boost exports is to come up with measures to make Japanese rice take root in the U.S. market. According to the Ministry … Continue reading

Number of wagyu beef export bases in Japan doubles in nine years; export to Islamic countries in mind
TOKYO, May 23 – The construction of beef processing facilities for export is accelerating in Japan to expand already-strong Japanese wagyu beef export. These facilities meet stringent requirements of European countries, the U.S., and new high-potential markets in Islamic countries. While the recovering demand in the restaurant industry elevates wagyu export volume significantly to hit a new record, the increase in certified beef production facilities will likely accelerate the move. The beef exporters must process meat at facilities meeting standards provided by each importing country or region. According to the farm ministry of Japan, the number of certifications given to Japanese wagyu beef exporters by their primary markets, such as … Continue reading
