Earlier this month, WikiLeaks, a website which posts confidential government materials, released two secret documents that show the state of the behind-the-door negotiations of the Trans-Pacific Partnership free-trade talks. One document describes deep divisions between the United States and other member nations, and great pressure being exerted by the U.S. negotiators to move other nations to their position. As the negotiations are expected to continue next year, it would be nonsensical for the Japanese government to make any kind of concessions to U.S.’ unreasonable demands, while ignoring the people’s right to know. The Japan Agricultural Cooperatives and its national political body held a rally in Tokyo on Tuesday, December 17, to urge the government and the ruling Liberal Democratic Party to increase budget spending for agriculture, as fiscal 2014 will be the beginning year for the government’s 10-year plan to double farmers’ incomes and the introduction of Japanese-style direct payment system for rice farmers. Takuo Fukumoto As winter deepens, production of salted salmon is at its peak in Murakami, Niigata Prefecture. Agricultural corporation Shinko Nosan is busy preparing salmon, curing them with salt and drying them for fermentation. The company’s main business is rice production, but it also engages in production of salted salmon for year-end gifts as a source of revenue during winter. They dress salmon, carefully removing dark flesh and internal organ membranes, and rub salt into it, leave it for up to a week and then wash away the salt and hang it for drying.
