【News】 Agricultural co-ops reform law passed in Lower House, leaving doubts over its effectiveness to increase farmers’ income (July 1, 2015)
A bill to revise the Agricultural Co-operative Society Law submitted by the government was passed in the Diet’s Lower House on Tuesday, June 30, and the Upper House is expected to start deliberating the bill in early July. The government says the main focus of the bill is to increase farmers’ income, but fails to explain exactly how. There still remain concerns over possible triggers to restrict non-farmer members’ use of primary agricultural co-ops (JAs)’ services in the future, indicating the need for thorough deliberation in the Upper House. The bill was passed in the Lower House plenary session by a majority, with support from the Liberal Democratic Party, Ishin … Continue reading

【News】 People living abroad to be appointed as ‘washoku’ ambassadors (June 30, 2015)
In an effort to increase the number of ‘washoku’ Japanese cuisine fans abroad and expand exports of farm products, the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries is considering appointing those living abroad, including non-Japanese people, as international goodwill ambassadors for washoku starting this year. In addition to already appointed Japanese goodwill ambassadors, the ministry plans to give the title to some 100 people abroad to have at least one ambassador each in major cities worldwide. As the world’s food product market and the food service industry are expected to show a large increase, it hopes goodwill ambassadors officially appointed by the Japanese government will publicize Japanese cuisine, leading to … Continue reading

【News】 More than 30 percent of dairy cows crossbred with beef cattle in 2014 (June 27, 2015)
Yuji Hosoda More than 30 percent of dairy cows which underwent artificial insemination in 2014 were crossbred with Japanese Black wagyu beef cattle to produce F1 breed calves for beef production, according to statistics by the Animal Inseminators’ Association of Japan. The percentage is the third highest since the association began compiling the data in 1995. The ratio for Hokkaido, the major dairy production area, topped 20 percent, marking a record high. The increase reflects dairy farmers’ effort to expand shipments of beef calves which are priced higher than dairy calves to cope with rising costs which squeeze their profits. This means the number of births of dairy calves will … Continue reading

【Editorial】 Trade Promotion Authority bill passed in Congress – Never let the government rush to follow U.S. in free-trade talks (June 26, 2015)
The Trans-Pacific Partnership free-trade negotiations have reached the critical line. U.S. Senate has approved the Trade Promotion Authority bill, legislation that guarantees President Barack Obama to conclude trade agreements by a timely up-or-down vote by Congress. The bill now awaits Obama’s signature. This means ministers of the TPP member nations are more likely to strike a broad agreement when they meet in July. Through TPA, Congress outlines high-standard objectives and priorities for U.S. negotiators to pursue in trade liberalization agreements, which means U.S.’ negotiating stance is highly likely to become harsher. We should never allow the Japanese government to rush to conclusions without disclosing information or keeping the Diet … Continue reading

Now the talks are in its crucial stage, with a possibility of being completed by the end of July. Farmers have shown increasing concern over the future of regional agriculture and are calling on the government to keep the Diet resolution which is a “promise to the people of Japan” to protect the nation’s key farm items. *Takahiro Orimo, 42, pig breeder of Fujioka, Gunma Prefecture.
