【Editorial】 Japan must stand as one against pressure to open markets (May 22, 2014)

Ministerial meeting of the Trans-Pacific Partnership member nations in Singapore ended without much progress. However, when Prime Ministecxgvcr Shinzo Abe and U.S. President Barack Obama met in April, the two nations are reported to have agreed on a “formula” to reach a bilateral deal, and worries are growing among the public over the possibility that Japanese negotiators would make a compromise regarding tariffs on key agricultural products. Rounds of TPP negotiations are expected to take place before chief negotiators meet in July, and we must work together to reaffirm domestic consensus on the negotiating policies. What the negotiators mean by the term “formula” is to find common ground by … Continue reading

【Editorial】 Breakup of the JA group must be avoided at any cost (May 15, 2014)

The Council for Regulatory Reform has released its proposal on agricultural reform which calls for revisions of agricultural committees, agricultural cooperatives and agricultural production corporations. It is a monstrously unjust proposal which paves the way for private companies’ unrestricted entries into the agricultural sector and practically forces the Japan Agricultural Cooperatives (JA) group to split up. We cannot possibly accept the proposal which is uncomprehending and ignorant of the fact that the JA group is a private cooperative organization. The JA group is now in the heat of reforming itself. We must work together to fight back against moves to dissolve the group. The proposal is an apparent effort … Continue reading

【Editorial】 Japan must protect its key agricultural products (April 23, 2014)

U.S. President Barack Obama is scheduled to visit Japan on Wednesday, April 23, and hold a summit meeting with Prime Minister Shinzo Abe the following day. One of the main issues on the agenda is the treatment of tariffs on Japan’s key agricultural products in the Trans-Pacific Partnership free-trade talks. The United States continues to demand high-level market liberalization. We can never allow the government to make political decisions and largely compromise for the sake of reaching basic agreement. Farmers and citizens are holding protest rallies day after day in various places and asking the government to keep the resolutions approved by the Diet. Abe should meet Obama with … Continue reading

【Editorial】 Protect cattle farmers in Japan-Australia EPA negotiations (March 26, 2014)

As Japan and Australia speed up negotiations under the Japan-Australia Economic Partnership Agreement prior to Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott’s visit to Japan scheduled next month, the Japanese agricultural industry is concerned over Australia’s pressure to open Japan’s agricultural market, especially regarding tariffs on beef. Australia has been asking Japan to largely lower the tariffs, and will surely increase pressure to liberalize markets if Japan shows any sign of compromising. We urge the Japanese negotiators to stick firmly to the Diet resolution. The Australian government is demanding that Japan more than halve its tariff on beef imports, which is currently 38.5 percent. The nation is highly likely to take … Continue reading

【Editorial】 Setting a deadline on Japan-Australia EPA negotiations is infringement of Diet resolutions (March 14, 2014)

Negotiations on the economic partnership agreement between Japan and Australia are starting to get strained, as the two sides try to reach agreement before Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott visits Japan in early April. However, agricultural committees of both the Lower and Upper houses of the Diet have adopted resolutions asking the government to continue negotiating persistently without setting a deadline. Farmers are deeply concerned as a senior Liberal Democratic Party official noted that Japanese negotiators have proposed reducing tariffs on beef. We cannot allow the two governments to negotiate for the sake of meeting deadlines. Ensuring a sustainable future for agriculture is more important than letting political leaders … Continue reading
