【Editorial】 Candidates of the coming Upper House election should listen to the voices of farmers (July 5, 2013)

17-day official campaigning for the Upper House election scheduled on Sunday, July 21, got under way on Thursday, July 4. This will be the first national election for farmers and rural communities to thrust their concerns to Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s administration which announced that Japan will join the Trans-Pacific Partnership free-trade talks. Japan is expected to enter the TPP negotiations on Tuesday, July 23, right after the election. Also after the election, the government’s Regulatory Reform Council will set on discussing in detail reforms on agricultural regulations. In that sense, the results of the election will have a big influence on the future of Japan’s agriculture. We should … Continue reading

【Editorial】 Listen to the voices from wildlife in rice fields (June 23, 2013)

I am a frog living in rice paddies. I enjoy looking at young rice seedlings grow bigger every day. At one time, all of us amphibians got into a terrible panic because of a fatal infectious disease called chytridiomycosis, but we somehow managed to survive. Now it is becoming clear that the disease is not as horrifying to Japanese frogs as some thought. Whew! Thank goodness. Still, my fellows are feeling restless. All of us creatures living in rice paddies, including rice fish, pond snails and diving beetles, are worried because we see less and less human beings in the paddies. You may think that we can feel more at … Continue reading

【Editorial】 Abe’s growth strategy needs a shift from an all-out emphasis on efficiency (June 15, 2013)

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s Cabinet adopted its growth strategy goals and fiscal policy blueprints on Friday, June 14, aimed at pulling the nation out of prolonged deflation and paving the way for economic revitalization. We appreciate the government’s recognition that the nation’s recovery is not possible without restoration of the agricultural sector, but we cannot overlook the fact that the government places high priority on Japan’s participation in the Trans-Pacific Partnership free-trade talks. This contradicts completely its policy of emphasizing the importance of agriculture, and even leads the agricultural sector to further deterioration. In order to revitalize the nation, the government must swiftly withdraw from the TPP negotiations and … Continue reading

【Editorial】 JA’s anti-TPP campaign to strengthen ties across the border (June 14, 2013)

A delegation representing the Japanese agricultural industry recently visited Washington to gather information and exchange views with agricultural groups and government officials of the United States concerning the Trans-Pacific Partnership free-trade talks. The delegation stressed the fact that there are people in the U.S. who are opposed to the TPP scheme, noting that the Central Union of Agricultural Cooperatives (JA-Zenchu) and the National Farmers Union representing family farmers in the U.S. jointly issued a statement to express strong concern over the TPP talks. Their action showed that farmers worldwide can cooperate to realize coexistence of farming in different countries. JA-Zenchu has a significant role to play in warning of … Continue reading

【Editorial】 Aging society with fewer children – Chance to reevaluate the cooperatives movement (June 6, 2013)

Japan is in the midst of population aging and falling birth rates, with the trend envisaged to accelerate. This not only indicates a decline in the number of consumers but also a drastic change in consumption patterns. Japan Agricultural Cooperatives (JA) should also restructure its business – not just production and sales but in every aspect – in line with the social changes. Their competition with private companies will intensify, but at the same time, cooperatives movement will face higher expectations to strengthen its cohesive power with clear-eyed perception for the future. According to the population projections for prefectures released by the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare’s National … Continue reading
