Starting this month, the Japan Agricultural Cooperatives will send a delegation to member countries of the Trans-Pacific Partnership free-trade talks to exchange opinions and information with government officials and industrial associations. JA group members will visit four countries, including Canada and the United States, by November. JA will also cooperate with a group of anti-TPP professors in Japan to present issues of concern regarding the TPP negotiations. The U.S.-led negotiations are expected to speed up this autumn as the members aim at reaching agreement by the year end. Now is the time for JA to put forth its clear stance against the TPP agreement at home and abroad, and … Continue reading

【Editorial】 TPP talks in a crucial phase – government should disclose information and present clear negotiation policies (Aug. 31, 2013)
The Trans-Pacific Partnership free-trade talks have entered its crucial phase, as negotiators seek to come to agreement by the end of this year. In the 19th round of TPP talks which ended in Brunei on Friday, August 30, the 12 participating countries issued a joint statement to reaffirm their commitment to speed up negotiations. The talks again gave the impression that they are a hasty, secretive rule-making process led by the United States. The Brunei talks were the first round of negotiations which Japan has participated fully, and the Japanese government is facing a difficult task as a latecomer to make a political decision on sensitive matters in a … Continue reading

【Editorial】 Commemorating 50 years of IDACA – enhancing Japan Agricultural Cooperatives’ contribution to the international community (Aug. 8, 2013)
The Institute for the Development of Agricultural Cooperation in Asia, which performs tasks related to international cooperation in the Japan Agricultural Cooperatives group, is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. In a ceremony scheduled on Thursday, August 8, attendants will look back over the 50 years of its history and reaffirm its role of contributing to the global community through fostering manpower. 【Editorial】 Detroit bankruptcy – the fate of an economy where the wealthiest takes away the wealth and the future of the nation (Aug. 2, 2013)
The city of Detroit, which has thrived as the center of America’s auto industry, filed for Chapter 9 bankruptcy protection in federal court in July. It is said to be the largest municipal bankruptcy filing in the United States history by debt, estimated to amount to roughly 2 trillion yen. The decline of the city triggered by loss of tax revenue indicates the danger of a regional economy depending on a handful of firms. America’s free market economy, in which the strong victimizes the weak and widens the gap between rich and poor, is beginning to collapse beneath its feet. Japan, which is pushing aggressively for deregulation and competitive … Continue reading
【Editorial】 Immediate withdrawal from TPP negotiations behind closed doors will be in the country’s best interest (July 27, 2013)
The 18th round of the Trans-Pacific Partnership free-trade talks, with Japan on board for the first time, ended with member countries agreeing to accelerate discussions in such areas as market access including tariffs. As was expected, the negotiations were kept strictly confidential. All the Japanese government could do was to make a debut and gather information on the talks, without being able to put forward concrete policy proposals. Let us make one thing clear. There is no reason for Japan to join the agreement which leads to deterioration of this country, placing priority on the interests of global enterprises and ignoring the will of the people. There is no room … Continue reading
