After the Trans-Pacific Partnership member countries closed their ministerial meeting in Singapore without reaching any agreement, JA-Zenchu head Akira Banzai told The Japan Agricultural News in an interview that he will continue closely monitoring the TPP negotiations and demanding the government to protect key agricultural products from tariff elimination. Q. How do you evaluate the current situation of the TPP talks? A. In the latest ministerial meeting, as in previous meetings, Japan was in a difficult situation as exporting countries of food products strongly called for tariff cuts, including tariffs on sensitive agricultural items. But I reckon Japanese negotiators and Liberal Democratic Party lawmakers in Singapore worked together to … Continue reading

【Series】 Agricultural policies – Interviews with political parties: Part 4 Taro Yamada, chief of Your Party’s agriculture, forestry and fisheries section (Jan. 31, 2014)
Q. Agriculture is facing an important phase both domestically and internationally. A. Your Party is basically supporting the Trans-Pacific Partnership free-trade talks. All the parties should make their stances clear, whether they are for or against the scheme, in order to discuss the issue. If the government is going to reduce tariffs, we also have to discuss how to cope with the adverse effects of tariff reductions. Farmers are the ones who will be influenced by the outcomes. The government must disclose necessary information as soon as possible so that we can discuss the directions we are heading for. Domestically, the government began talking about revising the rice production … Continue reading

【Editorial】 Listen to the voices of young urban farmers (Dec. 7, 2013)
Young farmers in urban areas have come up with goals of conveying the value of urban farming to residents and contributing to society through offering farmlands for use in time of disasters. As the government and the ruling Liberal Democratic Party will start full-fledged discussions on tax reform and budget compilation for fiscal 2014, we hope they will implement tax measures and other systems to support development of urban farming. In its policy book for fiscal 2013 released in May, the Japan Agricultural Cooperatives’ national youth organization pointed to development of urban farming as one of its major policy pillars. Based on the policy book, the organization’s subcommittee for … Continue reading
