【News】 Japan Agricultural Cooperatives group to step up cooperation with Japan’s most influential business lobby (Oct. 30, 2013)

  The Central Union of Agricultural Co-operatives (JA-Zenchu) announced Tuesday, October 29, that the Japan Agricultural Cooperatives (JA) group and Keidanren, an influential business lobby also known as the Japan Business Federation, will establish a working group to strengthen cooperation between business and agricultural sectors. The move is part of JA’s efforts to collaborate with other industrial sectors to come up with new processed items in order to add value to agricultural products and reduce costs. The JA group included importance of such cooperation in its proposal on agricultural policies submitted to the government in June.   The Japanese government and the ruling Liberal Democratic Party began considering revising the rice production adjustment program. Some government officials even indicated possible abolishment of the program, causing confusion among farmers. We urge the government to conduct cautious and cool-headed discussion, taking into account the current conditions of farmers. The top priority issue in agricultural policy is improvement of food self-sufficiency rate. The key to realizing the goal is full utilization of rice paddies, and it is necessary to improve the effectiveness of rice production adjustment measures. 【News】 Keeping cows on healthy hooves (Oct. 26, 2013)

  Masaki Shimizu Hoof trimmers gathered in Mito on Friday, October 25, to show off their skills at a national cow hoof trimming competition. 24 hoof trimmers of beef and dairy cattle representing 12 prefectures from five regions participated in the competition held by Japan Farriery Association. Tetsuhisa Fukami, 37, representing Kyushu, won the agricultural minister prize. The participants from Hokkaido to Kagoshima had associates hold cows to keep them restrained and carefully trimmed their hooves, using hatchets and hoof knives. 【News】 Malaysia’s chief negotiator says TPP pact should be flexible (Oct. 26, 2013)

  J. Jayasiri, Malaysia’s chief negotiator for the Trans-Pacific Partnership free-trade talks, said Thursday, October 24, that the TPP agreement should be flexible, taking into account member countries’ domestic situations. In a meeting with the delegation of the Japan Agricultural Cooperatives (JA) group to Malaysia, Jayasiri also said it would be unrealistic for the TPP members to try to strike a deal by the end of this year, considering that there still remain many difficulties in a number of fields.
