【News】 Japan recognized as having lowest BSE risk, a move to pave the way for expanding beef exports (May 30, 2013)
The World Organization for Animal Health on Tuesday, May 28 (Wednesday, May 29, Japan time), recognized Japan as having “negligible risk” of BSE, bovine spongiform encephalopathy, which means Japanese beef is classified into the safest category with regard to the disease. The organization’s decision came as the Japanese government and industry made thoroughgoing efforts in implementing safety measures and regulating cattle feed. The Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries plans to appeal the safety of Japanese beef at home and abroad, and the recognition will give Japan a rationale to ask the countries which have banned imports of Japanese-raised beef to drop their embargo. A group of some 900 university professors and researchers announced on Wednesday, May 22, their own estimate of the possible economic impacts of joining the Trans-Pacific Partnership free-trade talks. They estimated that the production in the agricultural sector and related industries together could decline by 10.54 trillion yen, calculated on the assumption that tariffs on 33 agricultural items are immediately scrapped, the same simulation adopted by the Japanese government in estimating the impacts. They also said that 1.46 million workers in the agricultural sector, or 1.9 million including workers in related industries, would lose their jobs, and that the nation’s gross domestic product would decline by 4.8 trillion yen, … Continue reading
